Oral DNA Testing in Fort Worth, TX
At our office, we use clinical laboratory services from OralDNA Labs® to ensure we are giving our patients the best oral health information possible. OralDNA Labs® is a specialty diagnostics company committed to providing reliable, definitive, and cost-effective clinical tests to help oral health professionals detect and diagnose the disease at an earlier, more treatable stage.
OralDNA Labs® helps dental professionals and their patients use salivary diagnostics to obtain precise evidence about the presence of periodontal disease and oral HPV, allowing for a more accurate diagnosis and, in the case of periodontal disease, more effective treatment.
There are several ways OralDNA® labs can help us and our patients diagnose and treat common oral health conditions: salivary studies to diagnose the existence and severity of periodontal disease, determine the genetic susceptibility of periodontal disease, and detect the oral HPV virus.
The MyPerioPath® salivary diagnostic test identifies the type and concentration of specific oral bacteria that are known to cause periodontal disease. MyPerioPath® helps provide our hygienist and doctor with better risk assessment and personalized treatment options for more predictable, positive outcomes. Often, specific antibiotics that are bacteria compatible can be recommended during the course of treatment for periodontal disease based on the test results.
The MyPerioID® PST® test identifies an individual’s genetic susceptibility to periodontal disease and enables Dr. Blair to establish which patients are at increased risk for more severe infections due to an exaggerated immune response. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, up to 30% of the general population may be genetically susceptible to gum disease. Despite aggressive oral care habits, these people may be six times more likely to develop periodontal disease, which is often a leading risk factor for diabetes, heart disease, and dementia.
The OraRisk® HPV test is a non-invasive, easy-to-use screening tool used to identify the type(s) of oral HPV, a mucosal viral infection, that could potentially lead to oral cancer. OraRisk® HPV enables Dr. Blair and your hygienist to establish increased risk for oral cancer and determine appropriate referral and monitoring conditions.
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common virus groups in the world. According to the Centers for Disease Control, at least 20 million people in the United States are infected with HPV, and there are approximately 6 million new cases each year. Oral HPV is a manifestation of the HPV virus in the mouth and is primarily found in the oropharyngeal complex (middle part of the throat). Specific types of oral HPV are now considered to be a serious risk factor for developing oral cancers. Early detection and identification of the presence or absence of oral HPV are important, as early oral HPV infections do not typically cause any clinical signs or symptoms.
